Let's Create Literate Learners

My students need a leveled text set (with storage) and a listening center. These items will help me bring literacy to my class as the school has no library.

My Students

For children to become literate, they must be exposed to literature everyday.

My second grade girls come from low-income families and public schools that are failing them to our Title I charter school.

As a charter school, we may not have the resources afforded to public schools but what we do have is determination and drive. Many of my scholars enter the classroom with nothing but passion and imagination as their supplies. Our teachers work countless hours and use their own salaries to provide what we can to a host of young ladies who come challenging us to prepare them for college. Each day, I am amazed how much these girls care about their future and how determined they are to beat the odds life has handed them.

My Project

Literacy is the backbone of education. Without it, there is little they will be able to comprehend and accomplish. This year I am introducing my scholars to the Daily 5 Café Reading/ELA program. The Daily 5 allows scholars to work on Reading/Writing Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, as well as Extending Vocabulary. Each day, they will engage in 3 mini-lessons, focusing on a strategy, and rotate through 3 of the five learning centers: Read to Self, Read to Others, Listen to Reading, Word Work, and Work on Writing while I pull individuals and small groups for skill building. The leveled texts and listening center I have requested will enable me to launch our Daily 5 Café.

Many of my scholars have little to no access to literacy other than what I have provided for them.

If they are to go to college and compete in the job market, they must obtain high-quality literacy-based instruction. Please join my mission to provide these young ladies with the tools needed to become successful adults. Thank you.
