My students need multicultural books to read that will help them enjoy learning English. I included multiple copies, so students can work in groups to create group book projects.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way." - Frank Smith. As an ESL teacher, I feel It is crucial that students understand that learning English is not erasing a beloved language and culture, but simply adding a second tool box of information.
My students are new to the United States.
They come from various countries from around the world, but a large number of my students come from Spanish speaking countries. My students are eager to learn, but are dealing with the challenges of physically and emotionally leaving their home communities. My school is a middle school in the Bronx portion of NYC. We have a population of 800 students, most of whom qualify for free or reduced lunch.
My Project
The bottom line is that my students need to learn to read in English, and since I haven't taught "beginner" English Language Learners much in the past, my classroom library is lacking in appropriately leveled books.
It has been shown that ESL students will improve their reading ability if what they are reading is culturally relevant. I want to provide my students with books that present characters who have had similar experiences to theirs. With these multicultural books, I want students to work in groups of four exploring and connecting this literature to their own lives, and still learning English through vocabulary exploration, and discussions.
I also included books that I want to use as independent reading books. My goal with these books is to pick lower level reading books that students will find interesting. Though we will be doing a large amount of project/group work, students still need to be able to read independently.
Your donation will change my students lives by helping them become life long readers.
My goal is to make reading something that you don't just do at school, but something that can be done for fun. You will be providing books that not only function on an academic level, but also on a therapeutic level. By reading books about characters who have similar experiences to their own, students will be more likely to accept the English language while holding on to their home language and culture.
