Let’s Cook! Teaching Cooking & Independent Living Skills

Help me give my students the opportunity to learn independent skills while learning how to make some basic meals with items like oatmeal, popcorn and jam!

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Maali's classroom raised $326

This project is fully funded

My Students

My students are from the Southwest Side of Chicago and are part of a Special Education Low Incidence Cluster program. They need access to curriculum that is both engaging and functional. These materials will help them build their independence and increase their self confidence.

My Project

While remote learning, we will be working with the students to learn some basic meal making skills. We will be showing them how to make a basic meal and also giving them the opportunity to build some independent living skills and confidence. Each week will be creating a meal together that will enable the students to recreate that same meal with their family. In addition to learning the meal making skills, we will be incorporating other skills into the lesson. Students will have to use math to use the proper amount of ingredients as well as language skills to read the recipe. For some of our students, fine motor skills is a concern. We are providing them with water bottles and the drink mixes will allow them to use their fine motor skills to open the bottle, pour in the drink mix and shake! Some days we will be watching a movie that relates to the lesson that we finished and the popcorn that they make will serve as their reminder of a job well done. Students will have to understand the concept of how much water to use when making the soup cups as well as how long to microwave the soup so that it is the correct temperature to eat.

Students will be able to make their own PB&J sandwiches to share with their families.

The oatmeal will be used to start our day as we share a healthy breakfast together before we get into the business of learning.

Knowing that they can do some meal making will show them that they are capable of so much more as well.

Please consider helping our students reach this milestone. It will help us to connect with them during this remote learning time as we share a meal together!!
