Help me give my students the knowledge of varying taxonomic animals. Let them view the inside of a dogfish shark and compare that to a pigeon, frog, or rat.
My students are high-achieving, creative, and driven teenagers. They are curious and interested in science. They are mostly college bound and hoping to pursue a science related field. They have the knowledge and interest to succeed, but they lack the exposure and laboratory skills to be successful.
With funds being cut, the students are getting the short end of the stick.
We need to make sure they are getting exposure to new technology tools and preparing them for what awaits in the future. Lab skills, problem-solving, and critical thinking are all areas they can improve in.
The students in my room range form English learners, special education students or have 504 plans, to GATE and much more. But no matter how they are classified, they are all hoping to get the best education.
My Project
The animals purchased in this grant will allow my students to really understand the varying members of the animal kingdom's anatomy. It will also help them increase their lab skills and their collaborative work since they will dissect in teams.
This sort of lab experiences will be remembered forever by our youth.
They will never forget the shark dissection and how large the liver is to help the animal stay buoyant or the rocks they find in a pigeons stomach to help them digest their food since they can't chew. Although a teacher can tell the students these things verbally, it is more effective if the students explore and find them out on their own.
Each unit we complete in class, I would like the students to be exposed to a hands on component. Since we can't bring the live animals into the class all the time, dissections are a perfect way to gain this experience.
