My students need 2 iPads and 2 sturdy cases to be able to access communication apps during speech and language therapy. My typical caseload is 55 students.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you imagine not being able to fully navigate the social world? Many children need assistance with basic skills such as reading facial expressions, determining appropriate personal space, and understanding the cues and gestures used in everyday communication.
The majority of my students have special needs and live in poverty.
They are wonderful, motivated children who attend a local middle school which lacks funding. These students deserve the same opportunities and experiences as students attending wealthier districts in NYC.
My Project
The two iPads that I would love funded would enable me to provide my speech and language students with innovative therapy apps that would enhance the social skills of my students on the autism spectrum. I would also use the iPads to provide alternative strategies for writing by utilizing dictation apps for my students with dyslexia and expressive language disorders.
My students would benefit from utilizing technology that can make a direct positive impact on their social, language and communication skills.
The iPad has revolutionized the field of Speech-Language Pathology and has become a common tool utilized by students with communication disorders. Unfortunately, working in a high-needs, but grossly underfunded NYC district, I do not have the resource to provide this tool to my students mandated to receive speech-language therapy.
