My Students
Welcome to Zucker Lightning Exceptional Children! This class serves students with a variety of moderate to severe intellectual disabilities in the self-contained setting. We focus on all core areas of academics within our class with an emphasis on functionality and job skills. Our students are full of energy and creativity.
We celebrate our students' abilities and uniqueness.
As a teacher at a low income/high poverty school, my students face many challenges at home and at school. Despite the many challenges my students face at home, they enjoy being at school in order to experience new things while learning.
My Project
In our classroom, we work on a lot of life skills that will make our students more independent. My students especially enjoy cooking. Cooking involves so many great lessons and skills.
My students learn to make their own food by following simple recipes.
This involves reading, comprehension, measuring, safety awareness, and following directions. All that hard work is paid off in the end when we get to eat our final product! Cooking in the classroom has also given my students a chance to try new things. When my students get to do things for themselves, they feel a sense of responsibility and they thrive!
In order for us to keep cooking, we need to keep our classroom kitchen clean and stocked. The set of measuring cups will help us when following recipes. The blender will allow us to start making new healthy recipes such as smoothies! The new dish rack and towel will give us a place to put our cleaned dishes after cooking. We sometimes spill and make a mess (it's all a part of the cooking process!) but the vacuum will help us clean up any messes we may have.
Please help us keep our kitchen clean and continue teaching independence!
