Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The most inspiring scientists I have met are the ones who step into my classroom every day. They are persistent, frequently engage in trial and error and, most importantly, they learn best when they are charged with the task of constructing their own learning.
I work at a school where the student population is predominantly Latino and where the majority of students receive free or reduced price lunch.
My students are energetic and highly motivated and, throughout the last couple of years, I have noticed that their elementary school exposure to authentic science learning experiences has varied from extensive to none.
My Project
My students need materials to build an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV), including solder, PVC pipe cutters, and soldering stations. With the use of the materials requested in this project, my students will have the opportunity to engage in a guided engineering experience. Building the Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) gives students the possibility of accessing numerous skills such as cutting PVC pipes, soldering, designing and troubleshooting their vehicle's effectiveness. All of these skills will enable students to experience genuine science and engineering that goes far beyond the textbook.
In the nine years that I have taught 6th grade math and science, I have undoubtedly witnessed the power that science learning can have on learners of all types from the student who is identified gifted to the student who has different learning and behavior needs.
Without fail, there is a transformative power to learning a science concept by experiencing it through authentic hands-on situations. That is what this project will achieve for my students.
