Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are some of the most impressive people I have met. Throughout their elementary years, they are grouped together in a bilingual program where their social skills are tested everyday in such a tight-knit group. We are a family of learners in this classroom. My students care so much about their community, culture, and their success. They strive to be accepted, their intelligence acknowledged.

I see my students take risks everyday in learning English.

I appreciate their patience with someone who is not bilingual, but at times, strives to just communicate clearly enough.

My class this year is full of energy, their voices strong, and their desire to feel a part of something shining through. I would love to give my students this year access to technology they have not yet seen, flexible seating, and materials that supply basic needs.

My Project

My students struggle with reading in two languages and often are disappointed with their level of reading stamina and engagement. By brightening our classroom with some new flexible seating arrangements, I hope to encourage my students to find a place reading becomes comfortable and enjoyable so they may fall in love with their book.

I would love for them to fall in love with reading.

With new seating arrangements, my students will be impressed and excited to experience what most of us already have at home or at school: comfort. Many of my students do not have this opportunity at home. Building a reading life is just the first step to literacy.
