My Students

Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it and who often have to move in with relatives after a job loss. Many also come from military families. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Our staff continually goes above and beyond to help their students. The school is based on the idea that we are all part of the same team, and we work towards helping all students. Almost 100% of certified staff work as mentors during their personal time to give students who need extra help the attention they need, whether it is an academic or a personal need. We are working hard to make sure our students are prepared for the future. We have added a MakerSpace and are now working to extend our STREAM clubs.

My Project

Our STEM club has been a big hit, with parents and students. Last year we had 25 students and parents meet before school to work together on STEM activities. This year we have over 50 students, and many parents that are developing STEM skills, building on what they learned last year.

Inspired by the project "Family Game Night for Special Education," I want to take our vision to a new level.

The idea of involving parents in STEM is key. The project mentioned inspired me to think about how to reach more families in our school.

Research shows that parent involvement is crucial to helping students develop an interest in STEM. Added to the fact that the careers of tomorrow will revolve around STEM concepts, it becomes important to not only get students interested in STEM but parents, as well.

We have some items we use for STEM club. We would like to have a few more items that would enable more parents and students to work together with the materials in an evening STEM night. This would get more parents and students interested in the STEM club and STEM resources we have at school. More would sign up for the club if they knew how much fun it was! We would be able to use the materials for the club also.

We have many students who really like KNEX and LEGO sets. These are great activities for families to work together on. I know they would love having these sets to build! The OSMO sets the students use their new IPADS to explore many STEM concepts, including coding. We have just started using OSMO and students really do like to use them.

I know this would be a great experience for our school! Thank you!
