My Students
Why do you read magazines? Is it a guilty pleasure? A way to connect with the world? Or do you read magazines because it is just plain old fun?
My students are recent high school immigrants from China.
My students along with their families sacrificed a great deal to have the opportunities that America can offer them. My biggest challenge is finding enough materials to help them succeed because they want to use every tool available to make their dreams come true. They often stay at school until 7 pm because they are busy doing homework and there is nowhere conducive to school work at home. They are the few students that are actually sad when there is a snow day!
My Project
Jr. Scholastic magazine is a great way to bring current events into the classroom. My students have great difficulty reading the newspaper or other adult magazines because of the difficult reading level and because they aren't tailored for teens. Jr. Scholastic is an authentic resource that is written at students' interest level reading level. They are colorful, interesting and fun which are the components that make the series a success with young adults.
Reading magazines is an important habit.
At the moment by students don't have the reading ability or the confidence to read adult level magazines. Jr. Scholastic will help make the world more "real" for my students. The magazine will also act as a stepping stone for my students to eventually get to reading The New York Times ( which hopefully won't be too long from now).
