Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are classified as special education students. They are classified with different disabilities, most prominent speech, learning disable and language difficulty. Many of the students who attend the school live in homeless shelters. More than three quarter of my students are from low income households and these students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school also provides uniforms, food, and various other supplies to the students who are housed in homeless shelters. My school's population is made up of 47% English Language Learners.
My students are low-level readers but have a great passion for books, a passion for learning, and they try really hard despite their disability.
The students in my class come from all cultures, such as Ghana, Puerto Rico, and American. My students smile every day and are eager to learn new things. They like to use the fine motor skills to create and construct things.
Despite my student's disabilities, I push them hard to come close to grade level in the content area. I always tell my students, a disability is a condition, it doesn't define who you are. So, with that being said, I have high expectations for my students.
My Project
Many of my students who are homeless, move from home to home constantly. Many moving in the middle of the school year. With the moves many of the students will regress in their reading.
With these books this would be a fun and engaging way to try and get my students reading levels up, and keep them up.
So, in the event they do move from shelter to shelter, which means from school to school, there reading will not drop so much.
Reading is fundamental and my students need to know how important it is to read and try to keep their reading up as much as they can. With the help of fun and engaging ways, the students are bound to soar in their reading.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
