Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our 1st graders are full of curiosity, wonder, and energy. They love asking questions about how plants grow, what they need to survive, and how living things are connected. To bring those lessons to life, we’re hoping to create a hands-on garden space right outside our classroom by adding three raised planter beds where students can plant, observe, and care for real living things.

These planters will become an outdoor learning lab where students can explore key 1st grade science concepts such as life cycles, weather, soil, and the needs of living things.

Beyond science, our garden will nurture responsibility, patience, and teamwork. Students will work together to plan what to plant, measure soil depth, track growth in their journals, and celebrate the fruits (and vegetables!) of their hard work.

Gardening brings lessons to life in a way that worksheets simply can’t. When children plant seeds and watch them sprout, they develop a deeper understanding of cause and effect, observation, and care for the environment. These hands-on experiences connect directly to NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) for 1st grade, which emphasize observing patterns in nature and describing relationships between living and nonliving things.

The garden will also provide a calming, sensory-rich space that helps students focus, cooperate, and find joy in learning. Whether it’s watering plants each morning or measuring how tall the sunflowers have grown, our young learners will take ownership and pride in their classroom environment.
