Let's Bike Our Way Across Town (Look out WORLD)!

My project needs an Hudson UpRight Ergometer exercise bike so that students may log in distances it takes to travel to places within our city, state, the USA and even the world.

My sixth graders live in an urban setting and do not have many opportunities to GET OUTTA TOWN. It's not always safe to let them ride with the wind, let alone venture away from their block. I try to OPEN up their world by introducing my students to places to go, things to do and encourage them to DREAM BIG! So, let's take a VIRTUAL BIKE RIDE through our town, the state, the country and finally, the world. Correlating literature and geography studies to real maps, brochures and websites certainly helps. But, students do not always have the mathematical concept of distance connected up to our map studies. I am envisioning that if we "pick" a place to go, we can calculate the distance and figure out proportional or ratio bike "miles" needed to complete the fictional trip. We will choose and research a place to go, as well as "figure" the math needed to compute the trip. Then we will post the information, a map and graphs on the wall so that we may monitor the virtual trip. Of course, I would love to put the ACTIVE students up to the challenge but feel if the exercise bike opportunity could be a REWARD, it might help to turn around inappropriate behavior. In addition, it will give otherwise sedentary students an opportunity to exercise. It would delight the physical education teachers completely! Please consider helping us to acquire an exercise bike so that my students may have an experience of dreaming bigger outside the neighborhood.
