Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our sweet students come from diverse backgrounds and bring a large array of experiences to our classrooms and school. One thing they all have in common is using their imaginations and creating a happy world within our walls. They also value the time they get outside to run and play and participate in various sports!
Daily, our students overcome a variety of basic challenges - getting breakfast, making it to school, having homework completed.
Our school is a Title I urban school with the most diverse population in our district. Over 80% of our students qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunch. School becomes a safe haven for these scholars - where expectations are the same every day, and their basic needs are met. While they come to school to learn, they thrive when they are given the opportunity to utilize a variety of resources to make learning real and fun. This is what keeps them coming back and keeps them hooked into learning the rigorous academic standards.
My Project
At our school, we realize the value of team sports and the effects that participating in team sports has on a student's overall education. We would like to create a network of teams in our elementary school that would be able to compete in a variety of sports on a daily basis. Team sports helps students to build critical thinking skills, broadens communication skills, and helps promote healthy lifestyles. It would also help them create and strengthen friendships through team building and promote positive social interactions.
Our students typically don't have access to team sports.
We want to provide that opportunity here at school for them to learn these valuable skills. Having equipment such as soccer balls, basketballs, and foam discs would allow us to begin with sports that students are familiar with and build a safe, inclusive school community!
