Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are from diverse cultures and different socioeconomic levels. They are kind and sweet students. My students are polite and courteous. We have classroom expectations, and we are building up our good character traits.

Our school is building a community of students who are compassionate.

Having students participate in lessons about compassion is important. Compassion is being sympathetic and showing concern for the suffering of others. The goal of my project is that my students gain a deep understanding of compassion.

The materials in my project include books, scratch art paper, watercolor paper, markers, and crayons. The book, "Give" by Jen Arena showcases ways people are compassionate towards others. The author wrote, "sometimes we are lonely, give friendship." This book will help my students gain a deep understanding of compassion.

During the holidays there are community resource agencies asking for donations for families in need. These agencies ask for books and art materials.

Our class will partner with a local agency doing a gift drive and support them. My students will use gift wrap we have in class and wrap books and art materials. My students will make cards using construction paper and markers we have in class, so that each gift has a card. It will be wonderful to read the cards my students make.

Participating in a project that teaches my students compassion will be wonderful. My students' perspectives will expand because they will think about other people's needs. I will measure my students' understanding of compassion by having them define compassion and explain why being compassionate is a good character trait. They will write short stories from the perspective of a child who received a gift, so they can see the world through a different lens. We can't wait to do this project.
