Let's All Be Flexible

My students need materials that will help them work in a flexible seating classroom. Many of my students have special needs and allowing them to work in various places around the room will help them concentrate.

My Students

I work at an elementary school in San Diego. Our school is unique because 97% of our population is military families. Because of this, the majority of our population is considered low income. Our families have very little money to spend on additional supports.

We also have a high population of students with special needs.

For this reason, it is important to differentiate the lessons and to create lessons that are engaging to all of the students.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to meet some of our students needs' because there is very little money to spend on curriculum or additional supports. With the new Common Core standards we were not given any new curriculum. We are all trying to come up with engaging lessons for our students.

My Project

I have many students with special needs. They have unique learning styles and find it easier to seat in different areas throughout the day. I would love these pieces of furniture to give them more options. The chairs would give the students the opportunity to find a place where they feel that they can work independently. The seat disk could be used for students that have a difficult time sitting without moving.

Flexible seating allows my students to take ownership of their learning.

They are able to seat where they feel that they would do the best. Many students need these options to help them focus.

I also believe that the book, Writing Strategies, will help me to differentiate my writing instruction to best meet the needs of all of my students. I am continuously looking for strategies to help those who might struggle with writing, to feel as if they are authors.
