This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This is my first year as an ELL teacher, and Union gap has just expanded our ELL program to serve 100% of students with ELL needs from Levels 1-5. Our team has expanded from 1 teacher and 3 para's to 2 teachers and 4 para's. Union Gap is a small town similar to the one I grew up in, a majority of our students come from homes where Spanish is the first and primary language. I am applying for this project to help support students in seizing their opportunity to learn English and excel in academics while still honoring their culture and heritage.
My Project
It is very important to me to build a classroom culture that values my students culture and heritage as well as their worthiness to an equitable education. I believe that by having new books with stories and characters my students can relate to, as well as values their culture and heritage will make an impact on their interest and willingness to read.
I would love to create an environment that fosters a love for reading for my ELL students, by creating a diverse classroom library with books that acknowledge and celebrate their diversity, culture and heritage.
It is proven that reading has a big impact on students language development.
Reading books with children helps develop their language skills by:
Increasing their exposure to language. Stories that rhyme are very helpful for teaching speech and language skills and can help children discover a love of language.Engaging children's imaginations, stimulating imaginative play (a primary way children learn about the world), and introducing children to things and places they may not have a chance to learn about otherwise, such as oceans or dinosaurs. Helping children work out their feelings about the world. Many children's books are on topics that can open up valuable discussions between a parent and child, such as books about sibling rivalry, nightmares, or dealing with difficult emotions.
More than half of students from low‑income households
