This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from low-income families and are first-generation students who plan on attending college. It is an urban school district which does not receive the significant funding that we need for all of the programs that are an absolute necessity to our students. They are wonderful students.
Many of my students are in special education and require extra supports.
As a school counselor, I work with them and teach them anti-bullying strategies and help develop personal and social/emotional goals for them, as well as career goals. I try to differentiate in my group work and have worked remotely with them conducting weekly counselor check ins and self help activities. Students will be taught strategies to help teach them coping skills for bullying and suicide prevention as well as stress release during Covid 19. Many of these emotional and social issues take over their lives during their high school careers and impact their success and many have struggled with remote learning. By teaching them the skills necessary, they can overcome the barriers they are faced with in order to be successful!
My Project
Students will have the opportunity to make their Worry Jars at home. I will distribute materials to students during hybrid learning and have them join me in Teams for a de-stressing activity. These jars will help with social emotional stress. The purpose of the activity is to help students focus on what they can control during this pandemic in their lives. As adolescents, this is a difficult time since they are unable to participate in social activities.
This will help them feel better about themselves and focus in the positive aspects of their lives during this difficult time.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
