Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
We need your help! I teach in a Title I school where 100% of our students receive free lunch. My school is also 60% ELL. I co-teach in a multi-age first and second grade classroom in which all of the students are English Language Learners.
My co-teacher and I work diligently to teach our students not only their grade level standards, but also how to effectively understand and use the English language. Currently, we do not have access to any pretend furniture for our classroom.
We need pretend furniture for our classroom to give our students the opportunity to practice their new language within the safe, supportive environment of our classroom. When you choose to fund this project, your donation will have an immediate impact on about 40 students every day. Students will use the pretend furniture in creative play during our daily center times. As teachers, we will be able to guide the students in conversation flow and offer new words to them that are not commonly used in the classroom setting. As students become more comfortable with one another this year they will engage in play with one another in English, trying out new words and forms of the language they are learning.
As an early childhood educator I know the important role that play has in a classroom. Play builds communication skills, imagination and creative problem-solving skills in students. It is even more important for our ELLs to use in a mock setting that will ready them for the real world outside of our classroom. Your help will ensure that my students have a daily opportunity to practice their new English language in a safe and supportive environment.
