This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the privilege of working at such a diverse school. My students come from a variety of cultural backgrounds. We are a school located in the South Bronx with many challenges. Despite the community our students are eager to explore and learn.
Our school is also considered a transitional school due to all the surrounding shelters.
I love working with this community. My students are faced with lots of challenges but some how they make it to school each day with a huge smile. Seeing them being so resilient makes me want to work harder to provide them with all I can. My students are resilient, curious and creative. They love to read, create art and use their imagination daily. Our classroom is a big ball of fun, where they come to create, explore and invent through new experiences.
As their teacher it is my job to support them in all walks of life. When I enter into the classroom I become their friend, nurse counselor, mom and so many other things depending on their arrival. I take pride in providing myself to my littles ones and their families.
My Project
Every year our school has a moving up ceremony for our Pre-K students and families. Each year we have been blessed to have the finances to cover for all materials. However, this year has been a struggle and unfortunately we do not have the resources that we need to celebrate. Our Moving Up Barbecue event this is our last family engagement which has proven through the years to be successful event. This golden opportunity helps bring families together. We provide food (sandwich, burgers) snacks (snack box consist of potato chips, cookies granola bars and drinks.) Most of my families live in temporary housing and they look forward to these events as well as connecting with the teachers, administration and other families in similar situations. This maybe their only outlet the barbecue breaks away walls that parents put up in order not to allow anyone close. However listening to music playing with the children and eating Good food always provides happiness.
I believe strongly that while breaking bread ( no matter what type) brings togetherness, conversation and great company.
With our barbecue we bring parents and their children together. No T.V. games or phones just food and play time. Quality time spent with each other. A memory that will last forever. Priceless!!!!!!
