My Students

"The fact that children can make beautiful music is less significant than the fact that music can make beautiful children."

My students are growing up in an ugly environment.

Every day they face challenges. Some have parents in prison or absent from their lives. Most cannot afford school lunch. The school tries to provide all the resources they can for the students, but there is only so much they can do. Unfortunately, a music teacher is not high on the priority list. However, my students love music. They are passionate about it, and they often find ways to make music from cups or rubber bands. My students don't always get along with one another, but when there is music involved, everyone is accepted and they work together to make something worth hearing.

My Project

I am requesting a set of recorders that my students can play. I want to teach them how to read music, understand the effect of tempo and volume, and allow them to perform concerts for their parents and friends. The recorders I am requesting have books so that students can practice from home and build on the skills they are learning in school. My goal is that the students will not only learn about music and how to produce it, but they will also gain a skill that they can take pride and ownership in.

I am passionate about music, and I have played instruments for most of my life.

I learned responsibility, teamwork, creativity, and discipline, not to mention a life-long love and appreciation of music. These are values that I want my students to understand. Playing an instrument will make them eager to come to school, learn a skill, and, above all, build their relationships with one another.
