Let Us Grow, Eat, and Learn

My students need materials to create a community garden to learn about healthy eating, consuming nutrient dense foods, and creating science journals to document their healthy food choices and plant life cycles.

My Students

Science and health concepts are important components of today's classrooms. The impact of the lessons are huge as teachers have the potential to inspire future scientists, engineers, doctors, and influence healthy lifestyles.

I asked my students what they like to eat and all of them replied with processed foods; it was a heartbreaking conversation.

None of them mentioned fruits, vegetables, or healthy grains. As they munch on chips and processed foods constantly, I worry that they aren't feeding their brains what they need. When I brought up the idea of eating things they made or grew, they became excited and said they would be willing to try healthier foods. My first graders are the inspiration behind this grant for a classroom garden.

My Project

Some of my students come to school hungry and ask constantly for snacks or what time we are going to lunch. It is heartbreaking to hear them complain about growling stomachs. Other students have full bellies, but not always with the most nutritious treats.

After talking with my students about eating healthy, they commented they would eat fresh fruits and veggies if they had more choices.

With their empty bellies in mind, their need for nutrient dense foods, and our science curriculum, this kid-inspired project was developed.

The old adage is, build it and they will come. Well, why not plant it and they will eat? Or, let them grow it and they will learn? Inspired by my kids' ideas, this project will let them get out of the classroom to plant a community garden full of fruits and vegetables! They will work on their science curriculum while growing healthy snacks that they can consume at school or even take home to share with their family. The learning opportunities are limitless!

My first graders inspired this healthy eating, live science project. They will build an outdoor garden, plant the seeds, record their observations in their science journals, and develop healthier habits. With a raised bed, all of the students will be able to get their hands dirty while learning. The height of the bed also means that students in wheelchairs will be able to access the plant beds. Through this project, the kids' request to complete more outside and hands-on science projects will be granted and bring smiles to their faces. The opportunity to try out nutrient dense foods guarantees their bodies will benefit too!
