This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Our school is located in the poorest congressional district in the nation, and all students are eligible for free and reduced-price lunch. The school is predominately Latino and African American. Thirty percent of the students are English language learners, and some are the first of their families to graduate. Despite all of this, 100% of our graduating seniors are college or career bound.

Our students should have the same opportunities as any other student in the country.

They work hard to succeed without letting anything get in their way. As a community school, each year our graduation rate has increased, and we want to make their learning as meaningful and purposeful as possible.

The other day one of my seniors said that the room would look a lot better and they would probably be able to focus better if they had different lighting in the room, because the school lights are fluorescent bulbs that hurt their eyes when they're trying to focus on their work, the whiteboard, and their computer screens. So I figured a good solution would be to have more ambient lighting around the room, rather than just the lightbulbs that are just the ceiling lights at the top of the room. This project will allow me to add more strip lights to the room and be able to change the color of those lights to help them focus and to give the room a better ambience.
