My Students
My students are a reflection of our community. I teach in a school where 32% identify as white, 38% as Black, 10% Hispanic and 8% Asian; the remainder identify as mixed race or another race.
I teach in a one to one computer environment.
Students learn to use the computer as an investigative tool.
We serve a large group of students with diverse needs. Over 63% in poverty, and 2% of our students are homeless. 14% of our students are in Special Ed and near 9% are English Language Learners.
My Project
In my 8th grade Social Studies class, we do not read from one textbook. We read from many texts, many perspectives. We look at the history itself, and the way the history was written. This is historiography-the way the story is told. Who tells us the story can tell us a lot. Unfortunately, it often only from the perspective of the "winners". I want kids to see all sides of the story. It makes things more interesting, more challenging. It also helps them see their reflections and place in the history of the United States.
I would like to secure a set of An Indigenous History Peoples' History of the United States for Young People for my classroom.
As the original people who settled this land, their voices should be an important point of comparison with the other perspectives in the events happening in the United States. What were Native Americans doing and thinking as the United States moved forward through its history? This book will help students find out, from the Native American perspective-as it should be.
