Let Them Talk! Oral Language and Socio-Emotional Support Through Stories

My Students
On March 12th 2020, I would have never believed in my wildest dreams that it would be the last time that I would see my students face-to-face in the Oral Language Lab! We were robbed of so many precious opportunities to engage in whimsical read alouds, oral dictations and dramatizations.
I teach at a Title 1 school, located in the Northeast area of Houston.
The school provides 100% free breakfast and lunch. My students are primarily from socio-economically disadvantaged households and lack experiences that will enhance their oral language development and socio-emotional skills. They are incredibly resilient, bright and curious children willing to explore the world around them, even with obstacles in their paths. I want to be "THAT" teacher who will equip them with the necessary tools to be successful, confident individuals that are life-long learners.
Because of the pandemic, my school will be virtual for the first six-weeks. I want to be able to provide my students, with your help a rich literacy foundation that's inclusive to all and will adhere to their individual needs. Having a strong, cohesive start to learning this school year will set them up for future academic success.
My Project
The iPad will allow students a mode to engage in modeled writing instruction and be used to take individual student's story dictations virtually in small groups on the Microsoft Teams platform. Students will then come together and dramatize their stories with their peers. Research has shown the power of stories help children cope socially and emotionally through traumatic events.
Rich, thought-provoking and diverse children's literature will promote strong oral language development, emotional support and a springboard for creative writing.
The books and technology will allow for support during this unprecedented time to help create a bit of normalcy for my students.
