My students need to improve their reading skills by seeing current information written at their ability level. Action Magazine and Choices Magazine are written as high interest, lower reading level to address reading deficits.

My Students
The students that will benefit from this project vary in many ways. They are kids from a small rural community. Each student has different academic needs, represent different backgrounds, and have different goals for their future. This year’s focus in my high school special education classroom will be to make personal academic gains by focusing on individual student needs.
The students in this class have a variety of disabilities including specific learning disabilities, emotional disturbance, health impairments, cognitive delays, and autism spectrum disorder.
Their ages range from 13 to 21. The average reading level in my class is at a third grade level, many are reviewing sight words or phonics skills. In addition many students continue to struggle with number sense, time, and money management. These are very important skills that need to be addressed and mastered for them to be successful members of the community. Although these skills have been taught throughout their academic career, it is important to continue offering them opportunities for mastery to build confidence in their skills.
My Project
Your help in funding this project will Let Them READ interesting articles written at their academic level. Having a set of ten Scholastic Magazines for use in my High School Social Studies class will offer the opportunity to learn about current events while stepping away from the classroom textbook. The reading level offers an opportunity to increase vocabulary at the same time offering easier reading for those with reading deficits.
The use of these two subscriptions will allow opportunity for engaging discussions and activities to get the students thinking.
Providing students with scenarios from real life and discussions on how to deal with these situations will be a valuable life skill they will need as successful members of society.
