Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a vibrant bunch of boys and girls who just want to be able to learn just like everyone else. Their intellectual disabilities often prevent that from happening. They all have different backgrounds. My students are a mixture of nationalities, languages, and disabilities. This is part of what makes them special. What they have in common is trauma, poverty, and a desire to learn despite their disabilities. Most of these are not qualities they are proud of, but they deal with what they are given. The results are mixed, but their drive never stops.

My Project

My school participates in an engineering program for grades 3-5. Though my students are in that age range, it is difficult to adapt the activities to their level. I don't want that to hold them back though. I want to create a "Maker Space" for my students to explore materials and bring their ideas to life. It will help with creative thinking as well as problem solving.

My students learn best with hands on activities, and when they are guided toward figuring things out in a new way.

They remember experiences much better than they remember talking. Creating this space for them to do just that is going to be so important for their education.

These materials will go into a space in the classroom, organized in bins on a bookshelf. Students will be able to use the materials at specific times during the day to explore on their own, have a problem to solve, or work with a partner on a project. Lower functioning students will be able to free build using Mr. Potato heads, blocks, play doh, and legos. Higher functioning students will be able to solve tasks in several different ways using materials in the area.
