Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a low income school district where our students do not have a lot of exposure to hearing stories be read aloud. Hearing a story read to them is a real treat for my 4th graders, who are English Language Learners. They struggle to learn the intonation and fluency patterns that native English speakers learn, so getting to hear a story read aloud helps them learn how to mimic the speech patterns.
Because of their low fluency skills, my students are all classified as "struggling readers". They have a difficult time reading aloud, though they are always eager to practice! They love listening to stories, but as a teacher, I don't always have the time to devote to reading to each group every day for a sufficient amount of time! They need to hear a story on their level every day, but that takes away from instructional time I need for other reading skills.
The listening center is the perfect solution for students to be able to hear books right above their reading level, to help them practice fluency and expose them to more vocabulary. This way, I can have one group of five children listening to a story and discussing what they read, while I work with another group on building reading skills. This allows for more individualized time with the students and allows me to teach on their level, rather than teaching to the whole class in general. I need books on CD that my students can listen to and five copies of the books so each child can look at a copy while they listen. This will help them improve their vocabulary and fluency skills, helping them become better readers and more successful students!
You will be helping my students become successful later in life with their reading. Their fluency skills impact their comprehension of what they're reading. The better the students are able to read aloud, the better they are able to speak, which means they will have better chances of presenting themselves and their ideas later in life. Your generous donation will help my kids be successful readers and learners through the rest of their lives!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
