This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For my students, home is a relative term. They are typically from the surrounding neighborhood without much experience in the world outside of a few blocks. Their streets are gang ridden, their external hardships are many. However, most of them come to school eager to learn. The students enjoy breakfast in the classroom, they look forward to hearing what is on the learning docket for the day, and they thrive under the positive affirmations that are thrown their way.

In my classroom, students are able to exercise their love for reading and receive both an embedded and explicit social/emotional curriculum.

Students thrive in an environment where their voice and feelings matter. They benefit from learning how to negotiate the world around them, and in some ways use that as leverage to engage in new experiences.

My Project

Going to the preliminary Responsive Classroom training changed my life and my classroom. After teaching for 8 years, the routine of teaching and the systematic disapproval of test scores became mundane. Upon hearing about Responsive Classroom, I wasn't too thrilled, but decided to give it a try. What I was doing worked, but it was exhausting, time consuming, and "extra."

Responsive Classroom is an approach that truly permeates in the classroom.

My students begin and end their day knowing they've accomplished something. It has improved the climate of the group and reinvigorated my love for teaching. Students are happier and fulfilled. Parents report a difference in their child's outlook and resilience.

This project will cover the cost of registration for more Response Classroom professional development training. My students will be able to get all they can out of their learning by feeling emotionally fulfilled by themselves, their classmates, and myself. They will have academic choices and meaningful consequences for missteps. Everything will have a purpose and they will be able to see that purpose knowing they are being treated fairly and as an equal.
