My Students

Did you have a favorite storybook character? I loved Anne from "Anne of Green Gables." Well my students love Moe Willems character Pigeon.

The students in my class and their families come from the West Indies and they are now living in an urban setting.

Our school is a Title I school, which means many of the families are living below the poverty line. My class is Pre-Kindergarten and it is the first time in school for many of the kids. They are great kids, very respectful to each other and to authority. They are so eager to learn and love to read as much as they can.

My Project

Mo Willems is the author of the Caldecott Honor winning books Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus!, Don't Let the Pigeon Stay up Late and The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog. These books have quickly become favorites of the students in my class. The "It's a Busload of Pigeon Books" set includes these three books. Many of my students do not have books at home and I would like to provide them with these books to encourage reading in their households.

I like to provide the best literature possible for my students.

I usually have to purchase books on my own, because our school hasn't provided new literature for the classrooms in years. It would be impossible for me to buy all of these books even though I know my students will benefit from them. This project is important to me, because I believe by providing literature they love the students will learn to love to read.
