Let The Music Begin!

Help me give my students the ability to play an instrument in our 6th-grade band.

My Project

We have begun a pre-band class for our 6th-grade students where we teach the fundamentals and help students get comfortable with their instruments. The clarinet and flute instruments will be used immediately by those 6th-grade students enrolled in this class. We currently have twelve interested students, yet we do not have enough instruments.

Learning to play an instrument can have a positive impact on a student's life.

Not only are they learning another language, the students are gaining fine motor skills, coordination, a solid work ethic, and self-esteem. Learning to play an instrument also stimulates the brain, improving brain functions such as abstract reasoning and memory.

According to John Dani, Ph.D., chair of Neuroscience at Penn’s Perelman School of Medicine, learning to play an instrument "engages every major part of the central nervous system" through a "total sensory input" (Sapega, 2017). Both hemispheres of the brain learn to work together, all while the student is having fun. What can be better than that?
