My Students
My school is located in a high-need community in New York City. All of the students are diagnosed as autistic. The children in the class are low functioning than the peers. Most of them are limited in their speech and language skills. In addition, their frustration tolerance is low and they require structured learning environment. When the students get anxious and/or frustrated, they often exhibit diificulties in following directions and behave aggressive behaviors such as biting, banging on the table, scratching, hitting, pushing, etc., to get out their feelings.
My Project
Since our former music teacher has retired, there is no any music teacher replacement in our school. The students do not have an opportunity to expose to any music, either singing songs or playing music instruments. As their classroom teacher, I find that MUSIC can be widely used for our students with autism, helping them engage, calm, follow directions and communicate their feelings. I try incorporate some music lessons in the students’ daily activity. For example, the students participated the holiday show on 12/18/19. Our class performed a “We wish you a Merry Christmas” dance. The students loved the performance and they engaged well in the performance. Due to the short of music instruments, two of the students were only chosen to play the electronic piano. Our class also borrowed some bells from other class. The research has shown that when autistic children interact with music on a regular basis, their behavior and communication skills improve. There is a remarkable connection between music and autism. The evidence also suggests that the students with autism are actually able to process and understand music just as good as their peers. Some autistic children have demonstrated abilities in pitch categorization, memorization of melodies, and labeling of emotions in music. Therefore, incorporating music in the student’s daily learning can benefit our students with autism.
