This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach at a Title I school in East New York. My students are special needs students with various disabilities. They come from a low socioeconomic background. Many come from countries such as the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Ecuador, Jamaica and Mexico. Despite the many challenges they face, I try to provide them with many meaningful and creative learning experiences.
My students face many challenges both inside and outside the classroom.
Although they have disabilities that are both challenging and diverse, they respond very well to creative and meaningful experiences. My students will be able to perform better if they are in a classroom that meets their individual needs.
My Project
My students all learn in different ways. In order to accommodate each of their learning styles I need to have a variety of materials available to them. Most of my students learn best through visual-spatial and bodily-kinesthetic activities. This means that I need to provide them with lots of games, puzzles, hands-on learning, 3-D graphics, real-life objects, models, movement, etc. I plan on creating centers and/or stations with a different focus and learning objective. Students will be paired up in groups at each station. The pop for blends, pop for word families and pop for sight words will reinforce crucial phonics skills. The emotion-oes and social skills board games will help my students with social and emotional situations. The hands-on learning counting mats will help my lower level students with number practice, number recognition and fine motor skills. Lastly, the social studies file folder game will serve as a center to reinforce maps, the community, holidays, cardinal directions etc.
Having these educational games will motivate my students to work cooperatively, spark their interest in topics they never thought could be interesting, and reduce behavioral issues due to the lack of appropriate stimulation.
With fewer behavioral issues the students will maximize their learning while having fun. Students with special needs need to be engaged in their learning and the traditional way of teaching with books/worksheets just isn't enough. I'm positive these materials will allow my students to exceed their potential.
