My Students
“Life is more fun if you play games.” ― Roald Dahl.
My students attend our unique K-12 school in Southern California, with a total population of about 600 kids.
Our school motto is: Never Give Up on a Dream. Our school focuses on developing the whole child, teaching not only academics, but also conflict resolution, confidence building, and social awareness. The teachers strive to make our school a place where kids want to be, and are inspired to be self-motivated, life-long learners. Our test scores are on the rise, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. About 80% of my class is on the free or reduced-fee lunch program, and 88% of my students speak English as their second or third language.
My Project
The Los Angeles Unified School District has mandated that elementary school students are to participate in 100 minutes of physical education every week. Play periods such as recess don't count. The minutes need to besprent participating in organized, teacher-led physical activities. "Playing" is not the same thing as, "sports." So if we want to get our kids more involved in sports and physical fitness, we need the proper equipment to do so. The practice jerseys will help foster a more positive "team spirit" amongst the children, while putting them in the mindset that they are participating in beneficial, athletic activities.
Because we are such a small school, we have no team sports at all.
Our budget simply does not afford us the opportunity to have a physical education department. Practice jerseys might seem like a simple thing, but they will bring to our school a component that is completing absent: that of participating in team sports.
