One thing that every teacher knows to be true is that kids LOVE drama! My 4th graders enjoy anything involved with plays, skits, or role playing. Unfortunately, it's difficult to find time during our school day for activities such as these. I discovered a resource that will provide an engaging way for my students to learn about science and history (and more) plus they build fluency skills simultaneously--all of this is possible through readers' theater.
First of all...I must tell you a little about my class, my school, and me. I teach sixteen 4th graders in a very small K-8 school in rural Tennessee. The majority of our students are underprivileged; however, our school ranked in the top ten percent of Title I schools last year! It was a great accomplishment. We have a great group of teachers who go the extra mile--our students are our proof of our determination! We focus much of our mornings on literacy skills. Literacy is so vital to our students' future success, and I'm constantly looking for new ways to make reading entertaining for my kiddos. Teaching kids to read is sometimes difficult, but teaching them to LOVE to read is even harder. That's why I need your help.
Last year I purchased two sets of Readers' Theater Scripts from Lakeshore Learning. I had a few dollars to spend, and the scripts sounded like something my students would enjoy. Well, I was right! Hoping they would be what I was looking for, I ordered two levels of the historical fiction scripts. They were PERFECT for my daily literacy stations because each script is designed for four readers at a time; and each of my stations are designed for four students. Each script has a different character's lines highlighted. Best of all, each box focuses on a different literary genre. I already have the historical fiction set (we use the scripts frequently), but I need the adventure, fantasy, and mystery scripts. By having two reading levels students who read more fluently can be challenged while other groups can focus on their own level.
Please consider helping us with this project; these scripts are laminated and will last for years to come. We love the historical fiction scripts and are hungry for more! With your help my students will have the opportunity to travel back in time, journey beneath earth's surface, get caught up in the Gold Rush, and more! A total of twenty-four scripts will keep my 4th graders reading with enthusiasm! Activities such as these scripts make it possible for me to work at my "teacher table" with small groups--this is essential to differentiate my reading instruction. My remaining students need meaningful activities like readers' theater to keep them engaged in learning. Thanks so much for your consideration and for caring about education! People like you are making real differences in classrooms!
