My Students

Our program serves children who are identified as at risk and children with identified disabilities or delays. My classroom currently is a mixture of children who are 3 and 4 years old. I have a very diverse group of students in my room - socioeconomically, ethnicity, English Language Learners and ability level.

For most of my students, this is the first time they are away from home for an extended time each day.

I pride myself in creating a safe and comfortable environment for my little ones to grow and bloom.

I believe very strongly that play is the way the children in my classroom learn best. I also strongly believe that early intervention is the key to success for the children in my classroom. We spend the vast majority of our day exploring and playing. Of my 15 students, 11 are expected to move on to Kindergarten in the Fall.

My Project

Imagine that you are 4 years old and you've just heard the story of the 3 Little Pigs for the first time. Now, your teacher asks you to retell the story. Won't that be much easier if you have little animal puppets to help in your retelling? Retelling is one of the first steps to pre-reading skills. I love reading stories to my little ones and I love it even more when I see them sitting in the reading center reading those same books to each other. Of course, they're not reading the words on the pages, they're actually using the pictures to retell the story I've read to them over and over.

There is little in life that is more rewarding than seeing children read to each other.

How much fun would they have to be able to retell the stories using puppets from the story?? Then they can even use the puppets to tell their own stories. The ideas are endless!
