I teach a first grade Inner City class of 24 children. They are all at the poverty level and do not have access to books at home. My students range in levels from non-readers to grade level readers. I have 4 special education children in my class as well. With the No Child Left Behind Act it is hard to keep up with the needs of the whole class with the limited materials I have acquired over time.
My children are all from the poverty level and do not have any books at home except what they borrow from my library. They are starting to read willingly and I do not want them to stop because I do not have enough books on hand to satisfy all of their needs. I need more lower level books because the class is just blooming in reading. I do have several that are being challenged and are reading at level G and H. I have many books at this level but few at the lower levels. I want to have books for all my children to read and reread. I want them to develop the same love for reading that I have. I need these books to keep them interested and reading. Please help us to acquire the needed books and make lifelong readers out of willing learners.
There is no public library near our school and most parents do not have extra money to spend on book orders. We do buy one book a month from the book club at $1.00 each, but I usually end up buying 12 out of 24 myself. I want my children to read and to keep reading.
With the leveled books I am requesting, I will be able to make up book bags of books at my children's levels that they can borrow or read in class. They will have variety and higher levels to move into later. The lower leveled books will reach even my most challenged readers who have requested books that they can borrow but can't find many that they can read. I see the interest, but I can't meet the challenge without some help from a caring donor. These books will reach from level A to level F. There will be more variety and many more books available for reading. Everyone will finally be able to read a book at their own level by themselves!
Your help and caring will give these readers the resources that they need to become lifelong readers. You can push their door open wider with the turning of a page. Make them better readers by sharing with them the books that they so desperately need. Thank you.
