My students need a small indoor garden in our classroom so they can watch and record how plants grow and change, especially during our long winter.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Locke's classroom raised $456

My Students
My project can be summed up in two quotes: "If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need," said Cicero and "The love of gardening is a seed once sown never dies," said Gertrude Jekyll. I want to bring the garden indoors to nourish my student's minds and souls.
My students are like wildflowers.
They come from various walks of life, are very diverse (both ethnically and academically) and want to learn and have fun. The 13 girls and 9 boys will bloom this year academically, socially, emotionally and behaviorally, with the proper amount of sun (my care and attention) and water (my instruction). Our school is in a wonderful part of our city, up near the mountains and trails. We are very diverse, both ethnically and economically. Our parent community is very supportive and we strive to provide many opportunities (sports and arts) to our student population.
My Project
We will grow herbs and vegetables indoors throughout our long winter. Students will watch and record the growth and changes in our plants and study the life cycles in depth. Students will take care of what is growing throughout the year and we will enjoy the fruits of our labor and eat our produce when it's ready. We will support this science endeavor with both fiction and nonfiction literature about gardening.
This project will enable me to infuse extra science into our existing busy curriculum and, more importantly, help nurture the social emotional learning that happens in first grade, in a different way.
Taking care of living things and strengthening that organic connection will help all my students be caring, helpful citizens.
