My students need a hydroponic garden planter system and 2 garden stands.

My Students
Having created a butterfly garden, herb garden and hydroponic garden in the past, new students to my room are always excited to get out and work in the gardens around campus.
My students love being outdoors (as most students do)!
Yes, teacher p.e. is fun, but when you can add in curriculum outside as well, it's a win-win situation. It is not hard to find volunteers to water the "tradition" garden or pick weeds out of the butterfly garden. It is surprising to me, how many of my students have never gardened before. At school they are very eager to get their hands dirty.
My Project
Having had a hydroponic system before (sadly it was discarded while I was on maternity leave), I know what quick results this type of gardening can bring. With the quick growth and variety of lettuces and vegetables that are planted in these pots, I envision wonderful salads being created. Gardening provides many levels of learning, from data collection to analysis of plant leaves, the students have a connection with "their" plants which allows for an investment of learning about their plants. I love when they compare the different leave patterns and speed at which they grow.
I would also like to have 2 more stands for the Earth Boxes that I have. Bugs can be an issue in our hot climate, and with these stands, the gardens could be raised off the ground. It also makes the gardens more portable and can be rolled into the classroom or out of the way for mowing purposes.
This garden project will expose the students to new foods (they get so excited when something like....radishes are ready to be picked!) and allow cafeteria to create things like salad dressing with the herbs for the salads.
I hope gardening at school will encourage them to try it on a smaller scale at home and make them more open to trying new foods.
