My Students
Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it and who often have to move in with relatives after a job loss. Many also come from military families. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Our staff continually goes above and beyond to help their students. The school is based on the idea that we are all part of the same team, and we work towards helping all students. Almost 100% of certified staff work as mentors during their personal time to give students who need extra help the attention they need, whether it is an academic or a personal need. We are working hard to make sure our students are prepared for the future. We have added a MakerSpace and are now working to extend our STREAM clubs.
My Project
We have started a STEM club at our school and have some materials that students have started to explore.
According to a study by Karen Bogenschneider and Carol Johnson, "A consistent body of research concludes that parents are the first and foremost influence on their children’s development and school success." We want to utilize this to help our children succeed.
In order to meet our district and state science standards, and to ensure that our students are prepared for the future, we need to involve families in our school learning community.
In addition to the introduction to MakerSpace that the students receive during their library time, we started a STEM club this past year. Parents are invited to join their students in the free before-school activity. We are also utilizing some high school students enrolled in technology classes to assist the students and parents.
Several years ago we started using a Maker Bot 3D printer. We printed some of the famous buildings of the world. We have these as models and the Art teacher has used them to help as she teaches students about drawing famous buildings. The LEGO Architecture sets can be used in STEM club, Art Club and Makerspace to build LEGO models of the buildings. We can also tie into science, math, and social studies.
We need more LEGO Architecture sets for STEM club. We do not have enough for the students enrolled. They are really learning a lot with our current sets, and we want to add more sets for them to use. The state, district, and building assessments for science will help us gauge how successful we are, as well as observations as they engage in STEM activities.
