Everyday my students come to their "home away from home" (their words, not mine) excited to see each other and eager to see what has been planned for the day. We start the day talking and listening to each other and strengthening our bond as a team.
Our school is located on the south side of Chicago in a low income community.
My students consist mostly of second graders who require special education services. They are energetic, well behaved, extremely bright and well-liked children. Our school was affected by the many school closings within CPS last year. My students have overcome many challenges with getting acclimated to new surroundings and new people. My students show just how strong they are everyday just by coming to class ready to further their education.
My Project
Our classroom has no dry erase boards to display explanations of the daily lessons. There is one chalkboard located on one wall in the classroom. The chalkboard is small and does not leave a lot of room for writing out math problems or sentences for writing lessons. The dry erase board will allow the entire classroom to be more interactive with each other. Students will be able to see lessons as I explain them and be able to take turns themselves writing on the board.
Using the dry erase board will improve the quality of our classroom by allowing students the opportunity to interact collectively.
Students will get a visual representation of the lesson.
