This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember sitting in school and wishing you could just be silly? My fourth graders want to be silly, and they usually do not want to read a chapter book. Dav Pilkey writes "Captain Underpants," a series of books about two boys who do silly things and talk about things that 4th graders want to talk about.
I teach library to grades k-8 in an inner-city public school, where 99% of my students get free lunch.
Starting in 4th grade the number of books that get checked out declines drastically. My students need books they can relate to and that are high interest. The point is to get them reading and nurture a life long love of books.
My Project
I used to hate these books as a teacher because some of the book is written with misspelled words as a child would write them. The I came up with a lesson where the kids rewrite the dialog using correct English. They love it! And the rest of the books by the same author flew off of the library shelves. I would like to do a read a loud with these novels, but there are so many illustrations that it is difficult without individual copies for the students to follow along with as I read.
Your donation will have a huge impact on my students' motivation for reading.
You also have the rare opportunity to make reading fun and just plain silly for my 4th graders. In an age where only the test matters to some, these kids will get to be a kid again and enjoy something just because it is funny.
