Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach middle school Humanities as well as Newcomer ELD in San Diego. We combine history and language arts with texts from around the world both literary and expository. My newcomer class is the largest in the district and helps a melting pot of students from Mexico, to Egypt, to Japan acclimate to school in a new country and in a new language.
These students are hard-working, caring, innovative, and truly the hope for the future.
As a STEAM school, we incorporate critical thinking and problem solving into our curriculum and guide students to form their own opinions and arguments based on the information given and researched. The diverse backgrounds of the students bring many new ideas to the table and foster empathy in addition to innovation.
My Project
Each spring our 8th graders read this biography of Louie Zamperini. They see how he was able to overcome racism and a troubled childhood to become an Olympic athlete. They then see how he gave up his career to fight for the United States after the bombing of Pearl Harbor and see how he went from airman to castaway to captive to finally being freed at the end of WWII.
This story shows how much pain and suffering someone can endure and still have hope and work to help others live fulfilled lives.
Even though we are in hybrid teaching, students will not be able to share supplies, including novels. Please help me give each student a copy of the novel so we are able to read this inspirational life story.
