Lessons for Young Men

My Students

My advisory meets every morning, with an extended advisory session once a week. We have completed projects and activities together for a year and a half, and it's time for us to read a meaningful book together.

My advisory is composed of 15 and 16 year old boys from all over the city of Chicago.

Like all teenagers, they are grappling with the transition from childhood to adulthood. Many of my advisees are facing additional challenges, such as living in poverty, managing unstable family situations, and forging a path to college as first-generation college students.

My Project

A Lesson Before Dying is the perfect book for us to read as a group. The book explores what it means to be a man in ways that a lecture or non-fiction text simply cannot. I am excited for my boys to read this important book. We are a school that focuses on discussion-based learning, and we will meet weekly at our Harkness table to dig deeper into the text as we read.

I hope that through reading this book, my advisees explore what it means to be a man, and that they consider how they can influence the lives of others like the main character in this book.

We will also explore the topic of justice in America. This will be a great experience for us to share in morning advisory, and we can't afford it without your help!
