My Students

My students come together from diverse backgrounds; Hawaiian, Filipino, Micronesian, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, to name a few. They are thinkers, dreamers, investigators, writers, and truth seekers. I teach 70 students in a Title I high school, on the rural, northernmost tip of Hawaii’s Big Island. This group of hard workers yearn to explore the world and all that it has to offer. Many of my students come from low-income and high-poverty backgrounds, and over 75% are on free or reduced lunch. These factors pose challenges both inside and outside of the classroom. As their teacher and guide, I strive to provide them with every possible avenue to success available. This is a group of intelligent, funny, strong-willed individuals, who deserve nothing but the best in order to make their dreams become reality.

My Project

A new printer doesn't seem like much, but it will make a huge difference for years to come. After suffering through layers of distance and online learning, I want to make our time in the physical classroom extra meaningful. My project includes paper, markers, and other art supplies to help get students off the screen, and engaging in meaningful classroom-culture building activities.

Students will be able to use the printer and paper to create artwork.

Our first project will be designing class puzzle pieces, which will then decorate the classroom. I have also requested a clicker so that I can students can lead their own presentations.

Many of my students come from low-income and high poverty backgrounds, which pose challenges both inside and outside of the classroom. As their teacher and guide, I strive to provide them with every possible avenue to success available. Having a microwave in the classroom will allow students to spend lunch time in the classroom if they choose to do so. Lysol wipes will also be important for keeping the classroom clean and free of virus.
