My Project

If my students had to name the main qualities of a classic novel, they would probably say "old" and "serious." I want to teach Less, by Andrew Sean Greer, because it's a Pulitzer-winning work of literary realism written in the past ten years, and, as a bonus, it's hilarious. It's a short, funny book about books, which I think would make it the perfect way to wrap up an AP Literature class. It also features a queer protagonist, which will help many students feel recognized.

I need more copies of this book to teach to my 12th grade classes.

I would use the book for AP classes for years to come (I plan to teach for a long time!).

My students are an ambitious group of high-achievers at one of San Diego's top public high school. Like many teenagers, they're talented at making connections, and they approach our changing world with openness. They appreciate English class as a traditional part of high school's academic requirements. What remains is to show them that novels aren't simply a hoop to be jumped through. A novel like this can shape them into lifelong readers who appreciate the ability of a good book to make sense of, not just our past, but our present world as well.
