This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I currently have a group of 20 fabulous Second Graders in a dual Language classroom. They live in a low income, high poverty stricken inner city community in northern New Jersey. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom due to their socioeconomic status and their varying linguistic abilities. Despite this, they all come to school everyday ready, willing and excited to learn! They tackle challenges and strive to do their best. They are resilient, respectful, and hardworking students.

My Project

Reading is fundamental. Understanding the written word is one way the mind grows. Teaching young children to read helps them develop their language, communication and vocabulary skills. I want my students and their families to be able to have access to books in Spanish and in English. Reading with a loved one, in a comfortable environment not only encourages bonding, but also gives children the chance to further their vocabulary and language skills. A lending library will foster positive interactions in families and invite them to get involved in their child's education. My students are low income and do not have access to many books at home. This library will allow children to have access to books that they choose and take them home to enjoy with their family.

"Access to printed materials — and not poverty — is the “critical variable affecting reading acquisition.” (McQuillan, 1996).

Young children who have access to books in the home and who are read aloud to regularly have the best chance of becoming successful readers and writers. "The most successful way to improve the reading achievement of low-income children is to increase their access to print. Communities ranking high in achievement tests have several factors in common: an abundance of books in public libraries, easy access to books in the community at large, and a large number of textbooks per student (Newman et al., 2000)."We do not have a school library. Many children have not been to their town libraries and do not know what it means to be able to take out books and share them at home. I want parents to have a connection between home and school. This will allow the parents to participate in their child's school life, as well as show them how reading is very important.
