This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have the great privilege of teaching P.E. at my school as well as helping with many other extracurricular sports teams. A sport that we are hoping to introduce to our school is baseball. Most of the student-athletes at my school have not had exposure to anything related to baseball due to the higher cost of gloves, equipment, and team fees from leagues around our city. We are thrilled at the prospect of offering another new experience to our students. We have high hopes that this team will give students another positive extracurricular activity and teach them about sportsmanship, dedication, and teamwork.
I teach at a Title I School in Nevada in which a high percentage of my students come from bilingual homes and all students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
My students face tough obstacles in their lives but arrive at school smiling and ready to learn. They love their teachers and they adore their principal. Our school truly is a community – a family. We each do our part, as student and teacher work side by side with one mission in mind: our students’ success. Our Kindergarten students even know the year of their college graduation!
My Project
My school encourages all our students to participate in after-school activities and sports. We offer a variety of different sports and clubs but due to a lack of equipment, we have not yet been able to cultivate an interest in baseball. Our community has many leagues and city teams but those often require costly fees and don't provide equipment to the kids who don't have their own bats and gloves. Many of my student-athletes' families cannot afford this equipment and therefore, baseball is not an option for these children to explore. This project would be the start of something new and exciting: a school baseball team.
These gloves will give my student-athletes a chance to experience baseball for the first time.
They will learn the basics of throwing and catching, scooping up grounders, and catching pop flies in the outfield. They will be part of a team and learn the importance of dedication and practice as they work on improving. They will have a positive interaction with peers and coaches doing a physically challenging and mentally stimulating activity after school. This project will give my student-athletes an opportunity that they will not get any other way. It may even inspire a future pro! One thing's for sure: this project will make a difference for years to come.
