LEGOS for the STEAM 21st Century Classroom

My Students

My name is Mr. M and I teach at a school in East Oakland. We are part of a charter network and serve 230 students, grades Kindergarten through 8th grade. Just to give you a little background on our school: the student population at ERES is 99% Hispanic, Latino or Mexican with over 90% of students being English Language Learners. Additionally, 96% of students qualify for free and reduced lunch.

As you know this is a demographic grossly underrepresented in college attendance statistics which is what we are trying to change.

We have the mission of making "College for Certain" for all of our students.

We aspire to teach our students about college now and give them the tools to be prepared for college and beyond because research shows that the pathway to college is long determined by the time students reach high school (Eccles, Vida & Barber, 2004).

We are striving to give opportunities for kids to get out of their community and learn about the world in which they live in. We are also striving to give them the tech resources to be 21st century learners. Thank you for donating to us!

My Project

My scholars are obsessed with LEGOS. They are fascinated with building, constructing, and applying their mathematical and scientific skills.

Using LEGO bricks is the perfect opportunity for building fine motor skills!

My scholars love the thrill of building and they can do this for hours, building up strong little muscles in their hands that will help them do other skills, such as learn to write.

This year we have a space unit and community unit. What better way to apply what they've learned than by building space crafts and a community! STEAM is all around us. Let's harness their natural curiousity and love for building in the classroom!
