Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

You're boss gives you 3 new projects at work all at the same time, a friend says the wrong thing, you get to the bank 2 minutes too late and they are closed, frustrating... imagine not having the skills to adapt and deal with the frustration you may be feeling.

There are 21 absolutely wonderful students in my 4th grade classroom.

The students come from many diverse backgrounds and bring so many different perspectives into the classroom each and every day. A few of the students in the classroom are on the autism spectrum; each and every day they work just as hard as all the other students to complete their assignments as they struggle to overcome challenges like dealing with frustration and expressing creativity.

My Project

The Legos and tactile balls will be used in the classroom to help promote and build focus, creativity and social skills for the autistic children in my classroom. It is truly amazing watching a child who struggles daily to express his feelings and deal with his frustrations be almost instantly calmed and and put at ease when manipulating a set of Legos. Within minutes he has been able to calm those feelings of frustration and begin to express how he is feeling.

Unfortunately the few Lego we have in the school are not in the classroom with us so it creates a disruption to learning when having to transition.

By having these materials in the classroom it will create less of an interruption to the student's learning and not only help to ease feelings of frustration and anger but to help build social skills among he and his classmates.
